Full GOD crew roles
Core GOD crew
Most GOD crew volunteer throughout the event, and we expect our crew to spend a significant majority of time during the event in the department. While some GOD crew do play characters, you're not likely to have much time for being in character during the event; they're characters that allow you to take an R&R break and see some of the in-character field, not get heavily involved in the game.
During the event, our GOD team will be moving between roles depending on the game's needs and our crews' abilities. This will involve handling player queries and processing player requests at our computer desks, laminating potions and exchanging resources at our resource desk, tracking and processing lost property, and dealing with the myriad administrative jobs that come up when running an event with almost 3000 people attending.
Packing weekends and pre/post time-in
One of the biggest tasks before we can run an event is preparing the event packs for all the characters on the field. This normally happens in Preston, on the weekend before the main event, and involves a mix of the PD management team and GOD volunteers. A character pack is printed and prepared for every player booked for the event, containing their in-character money, resources and item ribbons.
This is a big (and growing!) job, and while it doesn't happen at the event, it is a full weekend of hard work. As such, if you're able to help at the packing weekend, and help in GOD with the work we need to do before and after time-in (getting set up before we open to players, handing out player packs, and taking everything down again at the end of the event), we have a small number of crew spaces for folk who can spend most of the event itself in character. Obviously, if you also want to spend most of the event crewing in GOD, too, that's very welcome!
Rules for all GOD crew
The crew protocol and time off guidelines apply to all GOD crew.
GOD crew who are in the first category above – volunteering for most of the event – are classed as game crew, and subject to the additional rules that entails.
GOD crew who are in the second category above – helping with packing weekend and setup/take-down – are classed as event crew. However, as well as the rules for event crew, they are also subject to the "Don't get rich" rule. Both crew roles give volunteers access to considerable in-game resources, so we need to avoid any perception that their characters might be unfairly benefiting from that access.
Occasional volunteers
If you want to help out in GOD, but don't want to commit to the restrictions of the full crew roles, we're still interested in having you help! The busiest period for GOD by far is from when we open for pack hand-out until time-in, where almost every person on the field comes through GOD to pick up their character pack. We also need to partially take down GOD after time-out every night, and reassemble it every morning. At the end of the event, we then need to pack everything down and away. Help at these times is very valuable, but shouldn't get in the way of playing the game during time-in.
If you're able to help with these jobs without the commitment of one of the full crew roles above, we can't give you a free crew ticket, but depending on how long you're able to help us, we can offer some tickets for a free drink, free food, and – of course – our gratitude.
